The Book of Arcana

The much-anticipated second collection of poems by one of the most dexterous, original, and dazzling voices in American Poetry.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Back by popular demand, Spout Press author Jeffrey Little has delivered a second volume of bombastic poetry, gifting us with another slice of his slightly deranged mind. The Book of Arcana: Tomorrow’s Stone Age Cosmology Today is a rumination on crayons, jazz, supermarkets, and the Ottoman Empire (not necessarily in that order). Much like his debut collection The Hotel Sterno, published by Spout Press in 2000, The Book of Arcana showcases Little’s innovative style and distinct voice.

In this collection, Little has turned up the volume, and his scope is vast. Drawing from a dizzying collection of sources that range from arcane knowledge to popular culture, his ruminations are idiosyncratic but never dull. There is more to Arcana than verbal pyrotechnics, however. In the words of Dan Raphael, author of Showing Light A Good Time, Little’s “..rapidly shifting dynamism works because the poems are rooted in a sense of situation back-lit with emotional resonance.”

Little has been described by Maria Damon, author of The Dark End of the Street: Margins in American Vanguard Poetry as “an unsung poetry treasure.” Spout Press is pleased to bring this book and this author to a larger audience and to, as Damon says, “Put Jeffrey Little on the poetry map.”

“Jeffrey Little’s poems are aburst with incredible juxtapositions of imagines/words several times in each line – a Groucho-like barrage of language sparking memories of connotations to feel them inter-react. This rapidly shifting dynamism works because the poems are rooted in a sense of situation back-lit with emotional resonance.

--Dan Raphael, author of Showing Light a Good Time
